Club of the Month: Merton RFC

Merton RFC, based in south-west London, already have a strategy to stay in shape beyond the end of this season. A group of 15 club members will be tackling the Three Peaks Challenge on 19th of May, which entails climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell and Snowdon within 24 hours!

The Merton boys decided that they had to set themselves a challenge and try to raise funds to give something back to the local community, which they have proudly represented for 55 years.

They have taken their inspiration from a fellow ex-player who has spent the last couple of years running marathons, moon-walking up Kilimanjaro, and scaling the Three Peaks. Their aim is to achieve a fraction of what he has achieved to raise money for a deserving cause.

Merton have chosen “Shooting Star Chase”, which are a children’s hospice service caring for local families who have a child or teenager with a life-limiting condition, as they work locally to the club between the areas of Croydon, Guildford and Kingston (and further afield).

The team of climbers draws players from all three of the club’s teams, as well as a couple of ex-players, so the age range is between 19 and 60 plus!

If you wish to sponsor Merton rugby in their challenge, you can do so here.

On the field, Merton are a true community club, with the vast majority of their players being local to the area, even if they do include representatives from well-known rugby nations such as New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, and the USA, along with smaller rugby nations like Lithuania and Albania.

In keeping with the community feel of the club, the main sponsor is Ganley’s Irish Bar of Morden, where the players’ regular presence ensures that it is a mutually convenient arrangement!

Each Saturday, Merton field three XVs of varying standards, each playing in competitive Leagues, and they welcome players of all abilities.

Over the past five years, the club has enhanced its touring reputation and has visited Newquay, Leeds, Bristol and Edinburgh with ever-increasing numbers. Last year’s trip north of the border saw 55 kilt clad gentlemen sweeping into the ancient city. At the end of the month, this year’s jaunt to Cardiff sees a group of 60 heading to the principality.

Fortunately, for those that are due to undertake the Three Peaks Challenge, they have a three-week recovery period!
