FRN Narrowly Miss Beating Italy 12-17 at National Pub 7s

IMG_1696The FRN “Flair” men’s 7s team narrowly missed beating Italy in a close match that ended 12-17 at the National Pub 7s on 25 August 2013 at Harpenden RFC.

This was the 48th National Pub 7s tournament and the team’s second experience at the annual 7s tournament.

Tournament winners included the British Amy (Cup), RAF Spitfires (Barrell) and Suns Out Guns Out (Plate). The tournament also featured some great sides, which included Deutschland, Nigeria, White Hart Marauders and Apache.

As the last 7s tournament of the season, all 40 teams that participated soaked up the last bit of sunshine and put in their best efforts to leave it all on the pitch until the following summer in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

Tournament Information

The National Pub 7s started in 1966 when teams would submit a sevens side with the support of their favourite drinking place. Now this competition has grown into a nationally recognised and respected event attracting high calibre teams and international sides. However, the focus of the tournament has always been on the fun social side of the game and the tournament serves as a perfect opportunity for eager teams to have a pre-season run-around.

The format of the competition consisted of leagues of 3 teams. The winners of each league entered a Cup knockout phase against the other winners. The runners-up in each group played each other in the Barrel competition and the bottom placed teams did the same in the Plate competition.

“Mismatches can occur in the early league games but then the elite teams can take things easy and the less talented squads will have bragging rights later on in the pub about the time they played against this or that international.”

2013 Results

IMG_1627FRN faced Old Columbans and Italy in the pool stages. After a convincing 36-12 win against Old Columbans at the start of the day FRN faced the Italian national side.

The Italian national side featured many experienced players, which included one in particular that held over 30 international caps for his country. However, FRN displayed a strong and confident performance with a great defensive side.

After losing to Italy by one try, FRN faced Old Columbans once again in the Barrell Knockout. After winning 31-26, FRN faced Silver Cup 2 in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, injuries and an unconventional style of 7s play by the opposition led to a 14-21 loss where FRN’s road to victory ended in 2013.

2012 Tournament

3Last year the tournament featured the England 7s team, a highlight of the tournament. England 7s went on to win the tournament in an exciting final against Apache.

In 2012, the FRN 7s team did well to win all of its pool matches and faced Nigeria A in an exciting match, but eventually lost to the Bryanston’s Old Boys in the semi-finals of the Barrell.
