The Scrum
This month we will be looking at the scrum. The scrum is something which can easily change a game. A team with a poor scrum is always at a disadvantage due to the amount of scrums which occur during a game and will be more…
When most people hear the word “Peloton” they think of an expensive black bike with shiny red buttons and that controversial commercial where the husband gifted his wife a Peloton for Christmas.
However, Peloton is a lot more than just the bike. First of all, Peloton now produces two different products – the bike and a treadmill (aptly named “the Tread”). Second, the Peloton subscription is much more than just the cycling classes.
Even if you don’t want to purchase the Peloton hardware, it may be worth considering trying out the Peloton app, which comes at a very reasonable cost (£12.99 / month) and offers a variety of classes.
Classes are available in the following categories: Strength, Yoga, Cardio, Meditation, Treadmill Running, Outdoor Running, Cycling, Stretching, Tread Bootcamp, Bike Bootcamp and Walking – and appeal to both men and women with a variety of instructors.
The classes really are first rate and the instructors are quite engaging (albeit a bit cheesy at times). The variety is also quite impressive and provides you with an opportunity to try different classes that you may not otherwise consider trying (e.g. running, yoga, meditation, stretching, etc).
If the app interests you, Peloton is currently offering a 30 day FREE TRIAL, so why not give it a try? Check it out here.
It is also good to know that both the Bike and the Tread comes with a 30 day trial, so you could always give it a try and return the machine if it was not for you.
If you are interested in learning more about the Peloton bike (and getting £100 off your Peloton order), we have set out all of information you may want to know below.
When thinking about the Peloton, the first concern that most people have is the cost of the machine. Whilst the machines are definitely not cheap, payments can be spread out over three years through Klarna, so the monthly payments for the machine are actually about the same as a gym membership.
If you go for the original bike, the monthly cost is £34.50 and after 39 months of financing (0% APR) you will own the bike, which you can keep or sell and earn back some of the money that you spent.
The Peloton bike actually retains its value very well with bikes currently being sold at purchase price or even more!
It is also worth checking whether your employer or other subscriptions can offer you an additional discount on the Peloton. For example, Bloomberg offers a really amazing discount that gives you a free accessories bundle.
In addition to the bike cost, you will also need access to the Peloton classes. There are three options for this (from most to least expensive):
Monthly Peloton Account Subscription – £39 per month – this allows you to sync and record your bike stats like cadence, heart rate and resistance with your account. If you have a Peloton bike, it really makes sense to go for this option. The KEY THING to note here is that once you have this subscription you can add multiple users, so you can have a separate account for each member of your family (and even friends…). If you have 2 or 3 people using the subscription, it makes it much more affordable.
Monthly App Ditigal Membership Subscription – £12.99 app option mentioned above – gives you access to thousands of live and on-demand classes, with or without equipment. You can download the Peloton App on your iPhone, iPad, Android phones, Android tablets, Fire tablets device, Android TV, Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku, Sky Q, or access it on the web. Unlike with the Monthly Peloton Account Subscription, you can only stream one device at a time and this version does not sync your stats with your account.
No Membership – no cost – you will continue to have access to 3 pre-recorded classes (metrics will not be recorded or saved to your Rider Profile) and the Just Ride feature (no access to the Scenic Rides). However, there is an argument that if you don’t intend on using the Peloton classes, there are cheaper bikes you should consider than the Peloton.
If you would like to purchase the Peloton, and found this article useful, we would love for you to use this discount code, which will give you £100 off of accessories that you purchase with the bike.
DISCOUNT CODE:
We recommend the following three accessories from Peloton:
With the £100 accessory code, there is no reason why you should not get some of the items above as they will be free (or massively reduced).
Peloton also sells a heart rate monitor, but it has had very mixed reviews. We have found that Apple Watch works really well with a third party app called “Echo” (after initial connection issues). Others have recommended other heart rate monitors, which are regarded as being generally cheaper and more consistent than the Peloton version.
Many people have difficulty deciding between the original bike and the more expensive version, the Plus. Below is a summarised list of the key differences:
At the moment, there is a £545 difference between the two bikes. If cost is a consideration, it is this author’s opinion that the differences are just not worth the price tag.
When considering these two options, there are a few factors to consider:
The best feature of the Plus is the rotating screen, but a better option is actually to stream the classes on a television or to buy an additional accessory for the bike called a TFD Pivot, which gives you the same outcome for a fraction of the price at £69.99. However, please note this will void the warranty (so you must make sure it is not on the machine if it needs to be repaired).
If the sound system on the original bike is not enough for you, you can always connect it to other speakers through Bluetooth.
However, if the extra £545 is not that big of a deal for you (especially as the cost will be spread over time), then go for the Plus, but do note that the Plus generally has longer delivery times than the original. So if you want your bike sooner (see delivery section below), you may want to stick with the original.
Absolutely, however, please note that (1) the warranty does not transfer on sale and (2) used bikes are currently being sold for pretty much the same amount as new bikes. Used bikes can be found on:
Peloton also offers a Treadmill option which became recently available in the UK, but this is a more expensive option. The subscription and financing information still applies as per above. You can find more information about it here.
This article would not be complete, however, if we did not acknowledge some of the delivery issues that have been plaguing Peloton over the last year. Most of the delivery issues seem to affect U.S. deliveries, however, the UK deliveries have been affected as well.
This author’s Peloton arrived 1.5 days after ordering it, so personally we have not experienced any delays. However, the Peloton website does currently state that it will be 7 to 10 weeks for delivery of any of the machines. There has also been a lot criticism of the company online (there is even a Facebook group that has been started by disgruntled consumers that are waiting to receive their bike).
The machine has recently made a statement that it is working to fix its delivery issues, but please expect delays so you are not disappointed.
Despite all of this, would I still recommend ordering a Peloton Bike or Tread? Absolutely. It was the best purchase that I have made all year and will continue to reap rewards to my health for years to come.
We have in no way been paid to write this article, but we think that the Peloton App, Bike and Tread might provide a really good alternative for rugby players and other athletes whilst gyms are closed (and beyond!).
If you still have any hesitation, try the Peloton app for free for 30 days so that you can check out the classes before making any sort of commitment.
