National Pub 7s: 25 August 2013

national pub 7sFRN is looking forward to returning to the 48th National Pub 7s in Harpenden on Bank Holiday Sunday, August 25th.

The tournament will feature 48 local, invitational and international sides that will include the German and Italian national 7s teams.

This year’s entrants also include teams from France and Jersey and high-caliber sides like the British Army, Apache, the Rugby International Players Association, the White Hart Marauders and the Royal Air Force.

Last year’s tournament featured the England 7s national squad, which went on to win the tournament. More information about the 2012 tournament as well as photographs from the day can be found here.

Along with some great rugby on the day, there will also be a BBQ, paella stall, hog roast, mobile cocktail bar, other bars and food outlets and sports clothing shops available to spectators throughout the day.

History

Harpenden RFC has hosted this competition every year since 1966 and the tournament has consistently attracted teams of the highest calibre, as well local teams which have, historically, often been sponsored by local pubs. This year is no exception with teams representing the Engineer, the Silver Cup and the Honey Bee, taking part.

Despite the top teams which take part, the fun atmosphere of the day has never been forgotten and social sides, eager for a pre-season run-around, continue to be the life blood of the competition with teams continuing to come from far afield.

The underlying ethos of the National Pub 7s is never forgotten in this truly amateur area of the game; that is for everyone to have fun in taking part, whether as a spectator or a player.

2013 Tournament

The format of the competition will initially consist of leagues of 3 or 4 teams, depending on the final number of entrants.

The winners and runners-up of each league will then enter a knockout phase for the main Singleton Cup competition.

The losers in the first round of the Cup will then play each other in the Barrel competition.

The bottom placed teams in the leagues will play in the Plate competition.

This results in three competitions with each separate competition containing teams of roughly equal standards.

Timings & Admission

The tournament kicks off at 10:30 am with the finals taking place at around 17:30 pm.

Entrance is £5 for adults (under 16s get free admission when accompanied by an adult), so get yourself down to Harpenden RFC!
